River Flowers

The innovative character of River Flowers BV® is revealed by elements such as better product quality, reliable product information, and more efficient production methods. River Flowers BV® is one of the first companies to use a plant robot. This one-man machine ensures that all the flowers are of equally high quality, something which is very important. From a technical point of view the robot is very ergonomic and efficient. All the cuttings from River Flowers BV 2 and 3 are planted using only one robot.

In contrast with most other chrysanthemum companies, River Flowers BV® has opted to gather suitable stems (debudded Anastasia) four or five times for each crop. This gives the raw flowers time to ripen in the fields instead of on a normal bucket.

This benefits the quality of the sorting class, as it means that all stems within a certain weight class are all equally ripe. In order to select equal stems of disbudded Anastasia efficiently every day from a full field, River Flowers BV® has developed a special computerised unique system with two gathering belts.

The electricity needed to grow chrysanthemums is generated by River Flowers BV® itself using a so called Heat Power Link (WKK). This is a natural gas motor which drives a large dynamo. The fumes are cleaned and then used to promote the photosynthesis of the chrysanthemums.

The heat which the motor generates is used to heat the greenhouse. If not much electricity is needed for the cultivation, the generated electricity can be passed on to the national electricity grid. This is better for the environment than for this electricity to be supplied by an energy power plant.

At present, a system is being developed whereby the soil, too, can be disinfected using the residual heat from a WKK, an innovative development in which we are very closely involved. The idea is that this innovation will be implemented for the first time in The Netherlands at River Flowers BV 3.
